Clarification about COVID-19 case count

Oct. 29, 2020 - The Sutherlin School District continues to take steps to ensure the safety of all students and staff. Communicating up-to-date information to our community is important.

I would like to clarify the status of COVID-19 cases within the Sutherlin School District as of Oct. 28. One student tested positive at East Primary and on September 27 we notified staff and families who were potentially infected to quarantine. Later, a student and staff member at East Primary were considered presumptive cases. Information shared from Oregon Health Authority categorized all three cases as positive because the presumptive cases were symptomatic (in May, OHA reported that it would begin counting presumptive cases in its daily reporting https://bit.ly/3msZPMe). The one positive and two presumptive cases have been the only COVID incidents in Sutherlin School District to date.

We work closely with the Douglas Public Health Network to respond to any positive or presumptive cases in our school district to protect the health of our community. I urge our community to rely on local information from our district and our local public health authority for the latest updates.

We will keep families and the school community updated with any new information as it becomes available, while meeting the requirements to honor everyone's right to privacy.
