Middle School Social Studies Curriculum Update (Grades 6–8)

Sutherlin School District is excited to share that the new social studies curriculum will be implemented in grades 6–8 beginning next school year.

What’s Changing

Students will be learning through updated materials from TCI (Teachers’ Curriculum Institute), designed to make social studies more interactive, engaging, and relevant.

By Grade Level:

  • 6th Grade: Ancient civilizations and the Western Hemisphere

  • 7th Grade: Medieval world and global history through 1750

  • 8th Grade: U.S. history through the Industrial Revolution

What Students Will Experience

These materials focus on helping students:

  • Think critically about history and the world

  • Analyze primary sources and real-world evidence

  • Participate in discussions, simulations, and hands-on learning

  • Understand multiple perspectives and cultures

Supporting All Learners

To ensure all students can access the curriculum:

  • Spanish-language versions of materials will be available

  • Lessons include supports for different learning needs and abilities
