Act Now to Secure Summer EBT Benefits
This message is from the Oregon Department of Education - As summer begins to wind down, families have a limited window to secure essential food assistance through the Summer EBT program. The program offers $120 per child to help cover grocery costs when school food programs are not as easy to access. With the application deadline quickly approaching on Sept. 3, 2025, it's crucial for eligible families to act now.
Thousands of families may be unaware that they qualify for this essential benefit. The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) and the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) are urging families to check their eligibility and apply before the deadline. Remember, once benefits are received, you have 122 days to use them.
Most eligible children received their benefits automatically on May 22, 2025, if their households:
Participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
Participate in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
Are Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid) members in households with incomes under 185 percent of the Federal Poverty Level
Children in foster care also automatically received Summer EBT
However, families who did not receive benefits automatically, particularly those with children in Head Start programs that participate in the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs, should still apply to determine their eligibility.
Families are encouraged to visit sebt.oregon.gov or contact the Summer EBT Call Center at 833-673-7328 to verify their eligibility and apply.

Go, Bulldogs!

We are thrilled to celebrate Kara Kitzrow, a passionate and dedicated educator who has made a lasting impact on our youngest learners in Sutherlin. After years of shaping young minds in kindergarten and first grade, Kara has recently stepped into the role of reading interventionist—and she’s already making a powerful difference in early literacy across our schools.
Kara brings expertise, enthusiasm, and a true joy for learning into every space she enters. Her work is helping to lay a strong foundation for lifelong reading success, and her commitment to our students and staff is an inspiration.
Thank you, Kara, for being an exceptional educator and a champion for our children. 💙 Sutherlin is lucky to have you!

Go, Bulldogs!

This unforgettable experience is part of our leadership program offered at both SMS and SHS. A special shout-out to our SMS Booster Club for helping fund this opportunity for our middle school campers.
Students came back energized, inspired, and already planning their return next summer! 💙 #SutherlinStrong #StudentLeaders #OASC2025

We hosted 5 teams and over 250 players and coaches for an incredible few days of hard work, growth, and team spirit. Sutherlin was proud to have 41 of our own athletes show up and work hard this summer!
Huge thanks to the players, coaches, families, and volunteers who made this camp possible. It was hot, but the teams plowed through with lots of water and rest.
💙 Go Bulldogs! 💪 #SutherlinStrong #BulldogPride #TeamCamp2025

We wrapped up summer school last week, and what an incredible few weeks it was! Our students packed in extra learning, built new skills, and had tons of fun along the way.
This year, we focused on **real-world experiences**—bringing learning to life through hands-on adventures. From exploring nature at **Ford’s Pond**, to getting up close with animals at **Wildlife Safari**, to practicing math and teamwork while **bowling**, our students saw how education connects to the world around them.
They strengthened core skills, discovered new passions, and proved that learning doesn’t stop in June—it just looks a little different in July!
A huge **thank you** to our amazing summer school staff for your energy, creativity, and dedication. You helped our students grow, learn, and love the journey. 💙🚌🎓 #SutherlinStrong #SummerLearning #RealWorldLearning

Sutherlin High School has been named a 2024 School of Excellence by ACT’s American College Application Campaign (ACAC)—a national recognition awarded to just 26 schools nationwide for their exceptional efforts in guiding students through the college application process.
The award celebrates schools that have gone above and beyond to support first-generation college students and those from under-resourced communities in pursuing higher education opportunities. Sutherlin High School stands out as a beacon of this commitment, helping students navigate one of the most important—and sometimes most daunting—steps toward their future success.
“We’re just really proud of our students,” said Cathy Libolt, Sutherlin High School’s school counselor. “Applying to college can be overwhelming, especially for first-generation students, so we do everything we can to make the process feel doable and supportive. This recognition means a lot because it highlights the hard work of our students, staff, and community in helping every kid take that next step toward their future.”
Sutherlin High was among 5,854 high schools nationwide that hosted college application events last fall. Collectively, these efforts resulted in over 477,000 high school seniors submitting at least one college application—an increase of more than 10,000 students compared to 2023. In total, students submitted more than 1.3 million applications.
At Sutherlin High, these events are about more than paperwork—they’re about empowerment. Whether through campus visits, financial aid workshops, or personalized guidance, students were supported at every step, helping to break down barriers and build confidence in their future.
“Helping students access postsecondary opportunities isn’t just about checking a box—it’s about changing lives,” said Lisa King, ACAC Director. “The schools we honor this year, including Sutherlin High, are making that kind of difference every day.”
Since its inception in 2005, the American College Application Campaign has supported over 5 million students in submitting more than 10 million college applications. The School of Excellence honor reflects the top-performing schools in this national effort.
