In the 2019 Oregon Legislative Session, the legislators passed House Bill 3427, Student Success Act, and it was signed into law on May 20, 2019. This law aims to correct three decades of under investing in our schools and our children and includes sweeping provisions for new and improved services for children and families. Part of this Student Success Act is the Student Investment Account (SIA). The SIA is a non-competitive grant program which, when fully implemented, represents an investment of close to $500 million going directly to Oregon school districts and eligible charter schools. The purpose of the Student Investment Account is to meet students’ mental and behavioral health needs, increase academic achievement, and reduce academic disparities for historically underserved students. We would like your input on how to best utilize these funds in order to best serve the students and families in our community.

The Oregon Department of Education has determined that students and staff will not be required to wear face coverings during outdoor social distanced activities. According to the guidance, this applies to outdoor sporting events as well as graduation. Sutherlin School District will be implementing these changes on Thursday May 20th. Face coverings are still required in buildings as well as passing periods in breezeways. We know there still might be some confusion over the guidance so please be patient as we continue to adjust to changing requirements.
Outdoors: Students, staff, volunteers, and visitors are not required to wear face coverings outdoors (including, but not limited to: Outdoor PE, outdoor music, recess, and arrival & dismissal). Until additional updates are provided, all RSSL physical distancing and other related requirements still apply.

On March 19th Governor Brown changed the social distancing requirement in classrooms from six feet to three feet and while this is good, there are still requirements for six foot social distancing for specific students and staff, especially at our middle and high schools.
The three-foot distance requirement will not have much of an impact on East Primary or West Intermediate schools as we are already offering full on-site instruction for these grade levels.
After much discussion and deliberation, the district leadership has determined it is best for students and staff to continue as we are for grades 6 through 12 for the remainder of this school year. We do not anticipate making any changes to the hybrid model currently in use grades 6-12. Students in these grades must still meet the six feet social distancing requirement for passing between classes and meals. In addition, the change does not provide any additional flexibility for transportation purposes.
As the end of the school year draws close, thoughts have already turned to planning for the next academic year. It is our goal to resume a 4 ½ day instructional week as was in place prior to the pandemic. We thank you for your support and as always, Go Bulldogs!
Douglas County Public Health Network has informed us of a positive COVID 19 case associated with one of our athletic teams. The parents of all students who need to quarantine have been contacted and we are following guidance from DPHN.
