8th grade students wrap up their US History projects this week. Each project must showcase a visual as well as an element of writing, and must include evidence of historical research skills learned throughout the school year. Students got to choose their topic as long as they could follow these guidelines. Check out a few of their projects!

🏰✨ Geometry came to life in Mrs. Ball’s 8th-grade classroom this week! Our creative and clever students just completed an amazing castle-building project as part of their math unit on:
🔹 3D Figures
🔹 Nets
🔹 Composite Figures
🔹 Faces, Edges & Vertices
Using what they’ve learned, students designed and built their own castles—complete with towers, gates, and all the geometric details! 📐✂️📦
Hands-on learning like this helps students connect math concepts to real-world structures, and these castles are as impressive as they are educational. Great job, students! 👏

📚✨ Author Visit Inspires Future Writers!
Today, our 7th, 8th, and 9th-grade students — along with students from the Oakland School District — had the incredible opportunity to hear from New York Times bestselling author April Henry! She inspired us with stories about the power of hard work, thorough research, and believing in your own ideas. 💡✍️
Some students also participated in a special writing workshop and book signing, making it an unforgettable day centered around creativity, storytelling, and chasing your dreams.
A huge thank you to April Henry for sharing her journey, and to our fabulous SMS librarian, Dacia Roberson, whose vision, hard work, and fundraising made this event a reality. This was truly a community effort!

It’s concert season and this year we will be hosting a silent dessert auction at the shows. Come on out and support our awesome kids!
Sutherlin Middle School students worked with students from other schools and districts to film a public service announcement for Douglas County schools called, “Report, Don’t Repost!”.
Congratulations to our Symphonic Band! They won their league band festival last month and are headed to the state band championships at OSU tomorrow. At the 1A/2A/3A level, MS students are allowed to compete in the HS bands. We have six SMS students competing with the Symphonic Band tomorrow:

Please congratulate these students when you get the chance. They are playing extremely difficult music and working at a very high level while they are doing it. They are hardworking, reliable band members with a great, can-do attitude, and these six have truly helped to level up our band. We couldn’t have done it without them.
